Wyoming Music Teacher Mentor Program

Mentoring Mission: WMEA believes that any teacher can benefit by collaborating with a colleague/mentor. The mentoring system for the state music teachers has been established by the WMEA to partner requesting novice teachers with veteran teachers within their area of specialty. Project outcomes include:

1)    Increased retention of music teachers
2)    An active resource for teacher questions concerning:

  1.   Program structure
  2.   Classroom management/discipline
  3.   Music selection
  4.   Curriculum and Instruction
  5.   Moral Support
  6.   Festivals, Clinics, and Competitions
  7.   Other questions a mentee may have

Procedure: WMEA will create a list of mentors from different locations, grade levels, and subjects. From this list, the WMEA mentoring program coordinator will partner veteran mentors with novice teachers of the same level. Ideally, the novice teacher will be paired with a mentor cohort where one mentor has 5-10 years of experience and another who has 10+ years experience. Within this cohort, the mentee teacher can then begin a professional exchange with mentor teacher(s) that is designed to provide advice which will enhance teaching skills, locate resources, and establish networks that will build upon their success in the classroom. This is a process of collaboration, and not a form of evaluation. 

Participant Expectations:  Both Mentors and Mentees will be expected to:

  1. Participate in any mentoring sessions during the WMEA conference.
  2. Participate in weekly check-ins (can be via text, phone, virtual, or in person) between mentor and mentee. As the year progresses, these check-ins can be modified based on the needs of the mentee.
  3. Participate in Mentor/Mentee Roundtable zoom meetings hosted by the Mentoring Coordinator (Michael Jaycox). 
  4. Complete a program evaluation survey. This survey provides information regarding the procedures and practices of the mentor program.
